Mohammed Rafi Songs in Different Moods and Emotions

As  we  all known, there  are  nine  different  Moods or  Emotions  under  which  any song  can be  classified, this is more commonly  Called  as  "NAVARASAS", these  Nine  are  , Shringara, Hasya, Karuna, Raudra, Veera, Bibhatsa,Adbhuta, Shantha,   .Mohammed  Rafi, the  most versatile  Singer  this  country  has  seen,  has  for  sure  sang in all  these  Nava rasas.  This  Blog is  an  attempt  to  just  give  some  examples  of  songs  which can  fall  into each of   these  category  .  So here  we  go...

1)SHRINAGARA  RASA,  this  is Love, Romance , and  can say  most  commonly  used  in any of our  songs. Rafi  Saab  was  has  sung  so many  songs  in this,  to give  some  examples, Sau  Baar  Janam Lenge ( Ustadon Se  Ustaad), Yeh Mera Prem Patra Pad Kar ( Sangam), Abhi Na  Jao  Chod  Kar ( Hum Dono), Ek  Haseen Shaym Ko  ( Dulhan Ek  Raat Ki)  etc. But  what  we  will listen  today is perhaps  one of his  best,  a  OP Nayyar  composition,  from Film  Baharen Phir Bhi  Ayegi , ( last film from  Guru Dutt  Productions), starring  Dharam , Tanuja  Mala  Sinha. This  was  also  the one of first  hits  for  Indeevar  as  Lyricsist, Aap He Haseen  Rukh,  Aaj  Naya  Noor  Hai, Mera  Dil  Machal  Gaya, To Mera  Kya  kasor hai

2)HASYA  RASA, this  is  fun or  Laughter.  Expressing  or  making others  laugh  thro  songs  or  on screen  is  a  great  task and  this  aspect  has been  most commonly  used  by  our  film makers  from ages, to  ease  the proceedings  on the screen, or  the  comedians  were so popular  that  there  had  to be  songs picturisied  on them , Rafi has  sung  for  many of  them  be it, Mehmood,  in Gumnaam ( Hum Kale yeh To kya  Dilwale Hai) Om  Prakash  in  Jalli  Note ( Churi  Ban, Kannta  Bun )  and  of  course how  can we  forget,  Johny  Walker  and  Rafi  association , be it CID, Mr  and  Mrs  55  and most  famous  of  them  from  PYASA , A  intense  film but still  Guru  Dutt  had  space  for  this  immortal  song, composed  by SD Burman, written by Sahir , Sar  Jo  Tere Takare  Jayee, Jo dil..  More  famous  as  the  TEIL  MALISH  song.

3)ROUDRA  RASA, this  is  anger, fright, and  this  can be  for many reasons, love  failure, some body angry  with their  life, angry  with god  etc .While  depicting  this  emotion, if you observe  Rafi  Saab rendered  the songs  in high  note  or  pitch., whether  it is  Oo Duniya Ki Rakhwale  from  Baiju Bawara,  Yeh  Mahlon, Yeh takhton  from PYASA  and  best  of  all, from film   HEERA  RANJHA, a Madan  Mohan  composition, pictursised  on  Raj Kumar ,  Yeh Duniya  Yeh Mehfil  Mere Kaam ke Nahi..  so  wonderfully  written by  Kaifi Azmi

4)KARUNA  RASA , which, is  Compassion or  Sympathy, on screen  such songs  are  used  to  express  your  concern  on the  other  people  who are  in distress  or  ones  own  self,  many  songs  of  Rafi comes  to mind,  Chaunga  Mein  Tujhe  from  Dosti,  Kahan  Ja  Re  Hai  from  SEEMA , but  the  ultimate  one , how  can we seperate  Shammi and  Rafi,  a  Lullaby  from  his film BRAHAMCHARI, Shammi  singing  this  song to  soothe  the nerves  of the  kids  and  making them  sleep,  Main  Gaon  Tum So jaye .. a  wonderful compoitsion  By  Shankar  Jaikishan and  written by  Shailendra. Point to note  how SJ used  Shailendra  and  Hasrat  in same  film for  different moods of  songs, Amazing!!

5)BIBATASA  RASA , which  is  disgust, desperation,  this  is  expressed when one  is  in frustration of  the  world, life  around  them   and  want  to show  their  inner feelings,  I think every other  film  Rafi has  sang will one  such  mood of singing.  What better  than  Yeh  Duniya  Agar  Mil be  To Kya  Hai  from Pyasa, Mere  Dushman  Tu Meri  from Aye  Din Bahar  ke  and  the  best of  all  form film IZZAT, Kya  Mile  Aise  Logon  Se ,  a  Dharamendra , Tanuja  film,  music  by  Lakshmi  Pyare  and  written by  Sahir . Incidenatlly  this  was  first  and  Only  Hindi film in which  Jayalalita  has  fulL fledged  role

6)BHANAYAKA RASAM, which  is  showing  fear/ suspense/ terror.  This  can be used  to show  the  help less ness  of  a person, so  naturally  all  will be  sad  or  Pathos  songs.  What  comes  to mind , will be  Aaj  Purani  Rahon mein  from Aadmi  Aur Insaan,  Mili  Khak  Hai  Mohabat  from Chaudvin  Ki Chand   and  what I have  choosen is  Another  classic, Hum Bekhudi  Mein  Tum Pukare  from KAALA PANI  , A Dev Anand, Madhubala  film, which had  music  by SDB and  written by Majrooh.

7)VEERA  RASA , which is  Valour, patriotism , Bravery  etc,  Showing  bravery is not  fighting or  killing  enemies  but  can be  Victory of  good  over  evil, or  saving some  body . There are  many  songs  of  Rafi  for  this  mood, showing  these  emotions,  , Yeh  Desh  Hai  Veer  Jawan Ka  from Naya Daur , Zindabad  Mohabat  Zindabad  from Mughal E Aazam, Apni  Azaadi  Ko  Hum, from LEADER but  I have  chossen  is  ultimate  song, from the  War  Film HAQQEQAT , Kar  Chale  Hum Fida Jan o tan  Satiyon  . This  Chetan Anand  directed  film has  a  big star  cast, Dharam, Balraj,Sanjay Khan, Vijay Anand etc,  Music  was  by Madan  Mohan  and  patriotic  lyrics  by  Kaifi  Aazmi

8)ADBUTHA RASA , which  is  Wonder/ Surprise/ Praise,  these  emotions  are  shown  when  you are  mostly  happy  and  compare  things  to show  the  extreme  joy or  surprise, in  Bollywood  I would  say  this  mood is  shown when  Hero  is  showing his  wonder  or praise  to his lady  love,  so  songs  which come  to my mind,   Tumne  Mujhe  Dekha,  from Teesri  Manzil, Wadiyan  Tera  Daaman  from  Abhilasha  and  again the most  soothing and  I would  say  best  song  Rafi  has  sung for  Pancham,Maine  Pooch Chand  Se ,  From  ABDULLAH ,  Sanjay  Khan  praising  his  lady love  Zeenat  and  Comparing her  with Moon and  her  beauty  with  Moon Light, amazing lyrics  by Bakshi  Saab.

9)SHANTHA  RASA , which is  Peace,calm, Tranquilty ,  the  best  of  all  I would  say, when mind  is  at rest , the best  comes  out, no anger, hatred, fear  and  hence  it  is  all  calmness  around.  Every  Film  Rafi has  song  will have  such a  song, Basti Basti Parbat  from Railway Platform, Meri  Dosti Mera  Pyar,  from DOSTI and  what better  than  Main  Zindagi  Ka  Saath  Nibatha  from HUM DONO, A Dev , Nanda Sadhana  starrer  , music by Jaidev  and  written  By  Sahir .

10)VATSALYA RASA  , which  can be  affection /  Parental  love ,  and  this  is  shown by  parents  to their kids,  sibling  to his/ her  brother/ sister,  between two  friends,  memorable  song  is  how brother feels  when  sister  is going  after  marriage  from film  NEEL KAMAL, Babul Ki  Dua  Leti  Ja  or  to show joy , Father  singing birthday  Song  to his  kid,  song I have choosen, O  Nanne se  Farishtey ,  from Film Ek Phool Do  Maali,  Sanjay Khan Sadhan, Balraj starrer  music  by  Ravi  and  written by  Prem Dhawan
