Lesser Known Composers in Bollywood and their Wonderful Compositions , from 1950s to 19080s

       Remembering Some of  Forgotten Composers  of  Bollywood   and  their  Famous  Songs 

There  have  been  so  many  Music  directors  in Bollywood, who  have  worked  in lesser  films but have  given  us  some  great  songs , most  of  which  you would have  heard  many times but would have  thought is  composed by  some  body  else , more  popular composers. This  Blog is  an  attempt  to pay  little  tribute  to  few of those  talented  composers , the  time  period  I have  choosen  is  from 1950 to  1980.  This  list is in No  particular  order  and  so  it is not a  count down  or  anything           

1)SN TRIPATHI  : Known  as  the "mythological  composer " since  most of  films  for which he  gave  music  was  either Mythological/ historical / Fantasy  films.  He  was  not only a  composer  , but  a  Director  too  and  also  acted  in many films ( famous  for  playing  Lord  Hanuman) , His  song  Zara   Saamne  Aa  Tho  Kadiye , a  Rafi /Lata  Duet , is  ever  green song  , from Janam Janam  Ke  Pehre .  But Today we  will listen  to a  Mukesh  Song  from  his  composed/diretced  film  RANI ROOPMATI,  Aa Laut Ke  Aaj Mere  Meet , this  film had  Bharat  Bhusan  and  Nirupa  Roy  in the  lead.

2)N DUTTA :  Dutta  Naik, more  popularly  known  as  N Dutta , started  his  Bollywood  life  playing instruments  in  SJ  orchestra  and  than  was  a  Long  time  Assistant  to  SD  Burman in many films, he had  a close  relationship  with lyricists , Sahir  and  Majrooh  Sultanpuri.  He  composed  music  for  most of  Initial  films  of  BR  Chopra ,(before  he  switched  over  to Ravi) , The film Dhool  Ki Phool ( Yash  Chopras  first  movie  as Director)  had  the  Iconic  song by  Rafi,  Tu Na  Hindu Banega  Na  Musalman  Banega  , one  of best  of N Dutta/Sahir  Combination. We  will listen  to another  beautiful  duet  from  this  film,  in voice of  Mahendra Kapoor and  Lata , Tere  Pyar  Ka  Aasara Chahat  Hoon.  This  film had  Rajendra  Kumar and Mala  Sinha  in lead.  N  Dutta  Composed  music  for  many Marathi  films  also.

3)Iqbal Qureshi   : Again  one  of  those  composers , whom  many  would  not have  heard , but  if  I tell  you  few  of  songs  he  composed,  you will be  surprised , example,  this wonderful  song by  Mukesh , Mujhe  Raat  Din Yeh  Kayal hai  fromm film  UMAR QAID. Iqbal  worked mainly  with Lyricist  Qamal  Jalabadi . We  will listen  to  another  melodious , popular  number  by  Mohd  Rafi  form  another  lesser  known film  Cha  Cha  Cha ,  Subah  Na  Aaye, Shyam  Na  Ayee,  this  is  written by  Neeraj , one   of his  first  songs  as  a  writer  and  this  film starred ,  Chandrashekar   and  First   time,  Helen  as  a  leading  lady.

4)Sardar  Malik: Unfortunate , but true  he  is  known  as  father  of  more  popular  Anu Malik,  but  as  a  Composer, he  was  class  apart.  He  started  as  a  singer  but with likes  of  Rafi, Talat  and  Mukesh already  popular, he  switched  over  to  composing  Music.  His  most  well known  film  was  Laila Majnu , other wise  most of  films  he  gave  music  was  less  known  B grade  Films.  Let  us  listen  to this  wonderful  Tittle  track by  Mukesh , of  film  SAARANGA,  Saaranga  Teri Yaad  mein,  written By  Bharat  Vyas  and  picturisied  on less  known actor  Sudesh Kumar.  Not  Many know  that  Sardar Malik was  married  to sister  of  Hasrat  Jaipuri.

5)C  Arjun : Another  of  those forgotten composer, whose  fame  to  popularity  was  music  of  devotional  film,  JAI  SANTOSHI  MAA,  which got  released  in same  year  as  Deewar  and  Sholay and  yet  stood  high , in terms  of  popularity of  its music  , which in fact  made  the  film one of  biggest  grosser  that  year.  C  Arjun was  more  known  for  his  works  with lyricist  Jan  Nisar  Akhtar ( father  of  Javed  Akhtar), . Today  we  will listen  to  C Arjun's  Perhpas  most  popular  number,  by Mohd  Rafi (  probably  one of  his  best  Songs too)  from  Film  PUNAR MILAN,  Picturisied  on Jagdeep  and  Ameeta, Paas  Baitho  Tabiyat  Behel  Jayegi..  This  is  written by  Indeevar , one  of  earliest  hits  for  writer  also.

6)Ram Lal  : He  was  an  eminent  flute  and  Shenahi  player  and  was  prominent  in orchestra  of many composers  of  those  times  and  became  an independant  composer  , thanks  to V  Shantram. Ram Lal  composed  music  for  only 6  films, which  included  SEHRA  and  Geet Gaya  Patharon Mein of  Shantaram.  Ram  Lal  is  credited  with  using the  Jal  Tarang  instrument  in bollywood  music, first time  and  also  made  the great  Hindustani  Singer, Kishore  Amorkar  sing  the  tittle  song  of  Geet  Gaya..  Today  we  will listen  to  his  ever  green  classic  from  film SEHRA, sung by  Lata, Pankh  Hoti to Udi  Aate  Hai Rasiya  O Zalima , written  by Hasrat  Jaipuri   and  picturisied  on  Sandhya .

7)Prem Dhawan : A  multi talented  person,  he  was  a  Composer ,  Writer , Choreographer  and  an actor  too, he  was  well  known for  writing Patriotic  songs  and  as  a  composer  he  is  popular  for  witing  and  composing  the  songs  of  SAHEED  which made  Manoj Kumar  become  popular  as  Mr  Bharat.  Today  we  will listen  to  his  one more  popular  song, composed  and written  by him, from the  film,  PAVITRA  PAAPI   , in voice  of Kishore  Kumar,  and  picturisied  on Parikshit Sahani, Teri Duniya  Se  Hoke  Majboor , Main Bahut door  Chala..

8)Dattaram Wadkar : He  is  perhaps  the  most  well  known  music  arranger  and  Assistant  Director, a  job  he  did for  4  decades  for  composer  Shankar  Jaikishan. He  was  also  a  very good  Tabla  and  Dholak  player  and  for most of  SJ  hits  he  has  played  these  instruments.  As  an  independent  composer, he  was  given a  break  by Raj  Kappor  and made  him compose  in few  of  his  films  and one  Such  film  was  PARVARISH,  in which  Raj  starred  with  Mala  Sinha, one of  few  films  they acted  as  a  pair.  There is  a beautiful  duet  picturisied  on  them, Masti  Bara  Yeh  Sama,  in voice  of  Manna  Dey and  Lataji.

 9)Chitra Gupt  : Another  Composer  who  gave  music  for  more  than 150 films, but  hardly  for  the  Top Graders,  he  was  considered  the most  popular  composer  for  B and  C  grade  films,  but  some  of  songs  he  has  composed , especially  for  Mohd  Rafi  are  real  classics,  like  Chal  Ud  Ja  Re panchi  from  Bhabbi  and  Yeh  Parbaton  from  Biswajeet  Starrer  Vasna.  Today  we  will listen  to this  peppy duet  by  Mukesh  and  Lata  from  the  film Opera  House,  Dekho Mausam  Kya Bahar  Hai ,picturised  on famous  Villain  Ajit  and  South  Beauty  B Saroja  Devi.  Chitragupt  worked  very closely with  Lyricst  Majrooh  who  wrote  this  song  also.   Famous Composer  Duo,  Anand- Milind  are  his  children.

10)Sonik Omi  : One  of  other  less  popular  Composer  Duo  (  unlike  SJ, LP, KA  ) , it is  pair  of  Uncle  and  Nephew .  Again  most of  their films  were  B and  C  Grade  films,  but   some  of  their films  were  very  popular ,like  the very peppy, fast Number,  Kaan Mein Jumka, Chaal  Mein  Tumka  By Mohf  Rafi  from  Sawaan Bhadon.  Today  we  will listen  to  this  melodious  song  by Rafi,  Mukesh  and  Suman  Kalyanpur  , the  tittle  song  of  their  debut  film  Dil  Ne  Phir Yaad  Kiya  , picturised  on  Dharam,  Rehman  and  Nutan

11)Sapan Jagmohan: Another  composer  duo, who  started  as  Back  up singers in Salil Chaudary's  orchestra ,  and  started  their  carrer  as  independent  composers  at same  time  as  Pancham,  but  never  came  up  like  him.  They  were  again confined  to  B  Grade  films,  but  in between  gave  some  classic  songs  like  Mukesh  Solo  Main  To  Har  Mod  Per  Doonda  pada  from  Chetana.We  will listen  to their  another  famous  song  Mera  Jeevan  Kuch  Kaam  Na  aya, from MERA  JEEVAN picturised  on Vidya  Sinha  and  Satyen  Kapu.  Most  of  their  songs  were  written  by  Naqsh Lalpuri  or  MG Hasmat.

12)Sapan  Chakravarty : We  will  conclude  this  with  This  composer , whom  I felt  should  have  composed  more  in Hindi  Films,. A  popular  composer  in Bengali  films  and  a  long time  associate  and  assistant   to   RD  Burman, he  composed  in very  films  in Hindi, 36  Ghante  and  Zameer  being most  Popular . He  was  a  singer  too and  sang  few with  Pancham (  Tittle  track of Golmal  and  Satte  Pe  Satta, Pyar  Is  Mod  Pe).  We  will listen  to  this  super hot duet  from ZAMEER, Tum Bhi  Chalo  Hum Bhi  Chale,  by  Kishore  and  Asha  picturised  on Big  B  And  Saira  Banu.
